On soap cutting day I was trying to work fast to get the soap cut and on the drying racks. I had orders that needed packed and mailed. Scheduled pick up was at 10am. I have a one track mind. Soap was my only thought!

My nine yr old came in and was so excited. She had seen something beautiful outside and needed my phone for pictures. She took it and came back so happy. I had to sit with her for a minute to comment on the pictures. She is very good (too good? ;) ) at stopping to smell the roses.

Something I can really skip doing. I am thankful for children that teach me. Patience and slowing down.
And you know... All the soap was taken care of and soap was mailed on time. ;)

    I cant access my pictures at the moment. But Have to announce our soaps! They will be available on Monday Jan. 30th. These will be our January and February soaps. We just got our supplies later than we wanted to so they are both coming at the same time. Look for another scent in March!

   We have a Cedarwood and our DLM Shaving soap (which is lightly scented with Cedarwood)

    I was sure Cedarwood was a very manly only scent. But now that I have made the soap I
really like it! Mmmm! I would not have thought to buy it myself. But it was a suggested scent by a customer so I tried it. It is one that will be here to stay for sure! So yummy!

    The shaving soap feels extra smooth and silky! I cant wait to try it out! Wish I had a shaving brush to play with! I love the color the (bentonite) clay gave the soap too.

Our DLM Shaving Soap fresh made!Named after a dear friend that uses a straight razor and taught us how to make a great shaving soap.

It is lightly scented with Cedarwood Essential oil.

Similar to our other soaps but with added Castor oil (rich foamy lather)

Bentonite (a light green clay, it is highly absorbent and good for oily skin. It gives a slippery silkiness.)

and additional glycerine (for moisturizing)

We are hoping to add in more scents in this line as the yr goes on. This soap will be available soon!

Soap cutting day...

This is my favorite thing! I can look back and see what we have done. I think they are beautiful. Yesterday we made this Peppermint, some Tea Tree, Plain, Cinnamon, and Patchouli. I am half through cutting and putting them to dry on the drying shelves. We make our soap in 90 bar batches.
Tomorrow we have plans to make this amount again. We are making a Shaving Soap this week too. I am really excited about it! It is different than what I have done in the past. I hope it is as great as I want it to be!

Supplies Have Arrived!

Our supplies arrived yesterday! 55 gals of Olive, Safflower, and Coconut Oil and 128 lbs of lye! So today we made 450 bars of soap and will make another 450 in a couple of days! We will be adding some shaving soap in the next batch!

Peppermint Laundry soap.

Our last batch of our Laundry soap was peppermint. We like it. I for some reason put citrus scents in my head as the 'right' laundry scent. But my girls really like variety there. So our next will be orange. YUM! When the clothes go through the dryer Our house smells so yummy!

Since it is also cold and flu season we have been adding Colloidal silver to our rinse water. We like to be doing something else to prevent colds.

The laundry soap is so easy and works great. The girls spilled hot chocolate on their clothes the other day and ran to stain treat them with the soap. Worked great! No stains. They were thrilled!

a foam or froth formed when a detergent (as soap) is agitated in water

Wikipedia says:
a substance formed by gas bubbles trapped in a liquid or solid

Many people judge the greatness of a bar of soap on how well it lathers. We played around with our soap for a while to get a good Lather. We found Coconut and olive make a great combination for lather. We get many comments on how well the soap lathers. It is soft and soothing. Helps to trap and remove dirt and excess oils from the skin.

Oils...

We use 3 base oils in our main line of soaps. We chose our oils to be free of Soy and other harmful things. We wanted a great bar of soap. Over the yrs I have used so many different oils. from Animal fats to Crisco. I have tried many combinations. And one oil at a time. I had good results and less then that too. I had fun playing. But I am so glad to have the recipe we have used for 5 yrs or so. I love it! Coconut oil: It makes firmer bars. But too much makes a crumbly bar. Benefits include: Antimicrobial, anti fungal, antibacterial, Vitamin E, Vitamin K and minerals. It is great for Hair and skin care. A great moisturizer for dry skin. Coconut oil is used to treat Psoriasis, Dermatitis, Eczema and other skin infections. Olive oil: Olive oil is noted to be very moisturizing. It contains antioxidants, Vitamins A and E. It is said to have the ability to repair and renew free radical damage in skin. It can help protect and reverse damage and wrinkles caused by the sun, pollution, smoke and poor diet. It stimulates skin cells, that cause regrowth and maintain healthy skin.Safflower oil: Safflower oil has a great ability to remove dirt and oils from the skin. And provides a skin softening effect also. It contains Linoleic acid a essential fatty acid that is beneficial to the skin and hair.It absorbs into the skin easily and soothes and moisturizes and reconstructs skin. Soothes Bruises, irritations and acne. great for dry, chapped or cracked skin. In short our bars are moisturizing, dirt removing, skin protecting, nourishing bars. ;) We and our customers love them!Emily

Comfrey herb

We use comfrey in our mint soaps. It gives color and is noted to be great for skin issues. We use our mint soaps for rashes,wounds,cuts, dry skin and eczema. We use all our soaps for these things but really like the Herbal boost the comfrey gives. Excerpts from "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook"One of the main therapeutic substances in comfrey is allantoin, an anti-inflammatory that perks up the immune system, speeds wound healing, and encourages new skin and cell growth. It's a time-honored treatment for healing sores, bruises, and even broken bones. The tannins in comfrey are astringent, and the rosmarinic acid might contribute some anti-inflammatory assistance. Some extracts have shown the potential to dcrease tumor growth and extend the lives of lab mice with cancer. Peppermint and spearmint both contain comfrey. The 3 soaps I would consider a 'first aid pack' would be those two with a tea tree. They are great!Emily

Food Grade Lye...

We are starting to use only Food Grade Lye. Customer questions led us to look harder into our grade of lye. We had no idea there we're differing grades! We were working on placing a bulk supply order. And noticed they also sold Food grade lye. We read as much as we could about it.And have chosen to go to it.

ALWAYS GREATER THAN 99% PURE. It contains less metals than standard Lye. Works good to have consistent batches, formulated with hard-to-saponify oil blends, or employ sensitive essential oils. This grade is also Food Codex / FCC / Kosher certified. Can be used for Pretzels, Olives, Lutefisk, Hominy or any other food use.

If it is safe for food uses it has to be safer for soaps. It cost over double the standard grade lye but we want the best product out there. We are always wanting to learn. And discovered this when on a mission to learn other things about soap.

Saponification... and Glycerin

    Saponification is a process (chemical reaction) that produces soap from fats and lye. Depending on the nature of the alkali base used in their production, soaps have different properties. Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) gives "hard soap", whereas, when Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) is used, a soft soap is formed. In our soaps we use Sodium Hydroxide. The harder bar lasts longer and keeps its shape better.

   Basically, saponification is the chemical reaction between an acid and a base to form a salt. Yep, Soap is a salt. ;) When you make soap using a cold process method you mix a fat (which is your acid) with Lye (which is your base) to form soap.

   As you mix, and stir the carefully measured acid and base together, they start to react.Within the fats are a single glycerol molecule (which turns into skin nourishing glycerin) allowing the fatty acids to combine with the hydroxide ions within the base, forming soap. Two reactions occur. The first reaction is glycerol turning into beneficial glycerin, and the second reaction is the acid and the base combining to form a salt which is your soap.

In most 'soaps' you would buy at the store the glycerin has been removed. (And sold separately for more profit) Or they are not even soaps but rather detergent. If your soap is void of its natural glycerin it is not going to be skin softening. And can even be drying. A homemade natural bar of soap will have it's glycerin still in tact.

   In the Saponification process the glycerin becomes chemically separate from the soap. Yet still part of the soap. Glycerin is a Humectant. Meaning it ATTRACTS moisture to your skin. It is a great thing! And to think it is a byproduct!

Eczema

We get lots of requests for information on which soaps of ours are best for eczema and other skin rashes.

     Eczema is a skin inflammation which can range from mild burning and itching to a bleeding wound. They are due to an allergic reaction and is hard to treat.


     Most commercial soaps contain harsh ingredients.(And are often not even soap but detergents) The harsh content in this soap can lead to rashes, allergic reactions, and to eczema in worse cases.
Chemicals can strip our skin of its natural oils, making it prone to infection and irritation. In fact, medical practitioners highly discourage the use of commercial soaps as they can worsen eczema symptoms.

      Just using a pure homemade soap like ours is a great start. We add Comfrey herb to our Spearmint soap (and soon our peppermint. Which is a great skin herb. It was a great help to our daughter to use the soap often. We really liked the affects when using soap that contained the comfrey. We also like to use Tea Tree soap. It is antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic. Since her Eczema was pretty bad. (very thick, scaly, itchy and often would bleed) We found Tea Tree soap was a great option in keeping it under control. And infection away.

Our soaps contain coconut oil which is really great for skin and its issues. We use the same base ingredients in all our soap. And it helps keep in moisture. Which is really important when dealing with Eczema.

The soap gave her relief and less itching/burning. We did still have to change her diet. We found she was allergic to wheat and a couple other things. Now She has no signs of eczema most of the time. If any spots show up we just give her a couple bathes a day and it leaves again quick.

Lye,

Lye is a misunderstood item. Lye is caustic. We use less lye than is required in our soap recipe. We do this for a double reason.
1: It insures there is no remaining lye after saponification .
2: it makes a super fatted bar of soap. Which in turn makes it more moisturizing.

Many things are unsafe when concentrated. Lye is one one of them. Traditionally Lye is made by letting water seep through hardwood ashes. The ashes are not unsafe. But the concentration of it is. It can chemically burn. And can cause nerve damage.

When you properly mix the oils and lye you cause a reaction called Saponification. Which is the process of making soap.When the mixture of lye and oils starts to thicken the saponification process has begun. After 3 days it is completed. The soap still needs to sit for a few weeks to get good and dry. Here is a link with more information.

A couple days away...

We have continued to be busy. We mailed out our morning mailing today and we are doing another this afternoon. We are ordering bulk oils today. And have to finish a room in Patrick's shop to store it. We have out grown our local stores ability to get us our supplies.
We are taking Monday off so any orders made after 2pm today will be shipped Tuesday morning.

Bath Fizzy

My little sister also has a Daughter that deals with Eczema. She started making these bath fizzies and saw more improvement in the healing of the rash and way less itchiness. She shared the recipe with me and we love the skin softening and fun smell! You can really smell the virgin coconut oil and we put in peppermint and Lavender essential oils. YUM! SO nice for winter months with wood heat!
Our girls love them! It is a treat to add them to their bathes! We use 2 per bath. Also great for just a foot soak!

Bath Fizzy Recipe

2/3 cup oatmeal, ground finely

1/4 cup citric acid

2/3 cup baking soda

3 Tablespoons coconut oil (we use extra virgin for the healing properties)

1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

3 drops peppermint essential oil

3 drops lavender essential oil

I grind the oats in my blend tec then add in the rest and attempt to blend. ;) I end up dumping it in a bowl and kneading it til done. I use a cookie scoop to make balls. You want about 2 TBS per bath.

Add in a hot bath with a book and it makes for a nice evening! Enjoy!

    Patrick was working on knives last night and I had to slice soap. We are putting in a lot of work hours right now. I like to be early to bed but since I couldn't be I made Hot Chocolate for 2. And we were able to sit for a couple minutes and enjoy it. So nice!
We have more soap supplies coming in the mail any day. Then making more soap. We have more soap ready. We are doing pretty well at keeping on top of soap supply. It is funny how things go in spurts. One day most orders will be Tea Tree. The next Lavender. Almost like the customers get together and talk it over ahead of time.

Mailing this week. And How long our soap lasts!

I am mailing twice a day this week. So any orders made by 3 pm will be mailed out same day. We mail Priority mail. Which is said to take 2-4 days to be delivered.
We are getting lots of orders and questions right now. Which has been great fun! We currently have all scents still available. Making lots of soap also to keep up. Ordered more supplies and planning to make lots more this week! We let our soap cure a month before selling. we want our bars to last you as long as they can. Our Customers say a bar lasts 2 and a half or 3 weeks. 1 Bar in the shower lasts our family of 8 just over a week. And we have tiny boys that get more than daily bathes. ;)

Our New Packaging!

My oldest and I spent the day making fabric soap sacks. We had fun and feel they make them feel more old fashioned and homey. And let the air still circulate through them. So they are nice and super dry. The drier your soap the longer it will last. Let us know if you like the change from the plastic bags! We sure do!

Time is running out, Today when I was at the Post Office there was a line out the Door!!! So if you want some soap before Christmas get your orders in now! We have a few baskets left the price is $40 with FREE SHIPPING. Baskets may very but will come with 8 bars of soap two small or one large candle. In the past it has taken 2-4 days from the day we ship to receiving your package, however with the lines at the Post Office I wouldn't take any chances. If you have your order in before Tuesday morning I would guess you would have it before Christmas, but no guarantees! Orders going out every Day!

who has placed an order here lately! In the last two weeks we have shipped out over 70 orders!

We had one person who ended up having to pay shipping cost because the postage got lost in the mail, we refunded the cost and are hoping to get it worked out with the post office. Soap Curing...

This is our soap curing shelf. About a thousand bars are there now. We are making a couple batches a week right now. (200- 400 bars) It is great!
And it smells so yummy here! The bars sit here to air dry 3-4 weeks. We then package and mail them out. The dryer the bar the longer it lasts.
When you are using your soap if you have a soap dish that drains well your soap will last longer. We use a wooden one at our sinks. It works well.
We really enjoy making soap. And seeing full shelves is wonderful! They empty out fast when cured though.
If you have never tried out soap please do! I think you will be satisfied. If for some reason you are not please let us know. We do all we can to make things right!

Soap Bags...

Our oldest heard us say we wanted to make cloth bags for our soaps. She got excited and begged for a week for us to get started! So we will soon have nicer bags for our soaps. And I have her to thank for it. She did great and had fun. Next she is planning on making tags for them. They are cute!

We have been really busy! It has been great! We are working on adding in new soaps. And have gotten many ideas on them from customers too! We love feed back! The more you tell us the more we can do!
With the Holidays here many boxes we are sending are gifts. I think that is so fun! Our tiny Post office has enjoyed seeing us grow. It is really nice! We have put our candles in a local Amish store. Our beeswax comes from a amish neighbor of the store. Local selling at its best! I get the raw unstrained wax and turn them into beautiful candles.
The children are loving to help package soap. If I get caught doing it they hurry to help get the product I need. Makes it fun being a family business! The children are hoping to help get their products online at some point soon also. Which will be a great thing for them!

We made 200 bars of soap again last night. They smell so yummy! Cant wait to cut them!

Powdered Laundry soap...

We made powdered Laundry soap last night. It is something all the children get in on in one way or another. 2 took pictures and 2 helped with ingredients. It is really easy and works well. We generally make a liquid laundry soap. But this is faster. We will share both recipes here.If you try it share your thoughts here with us. It is way cheaper to make your own. And you know the ingredients. And you chose the scent! That is the best part!

The recipe is
2 bars of soap (we used our Cinnamon smelled great!)
1 cup of Borax
1 cup baking soda or washing soda
Essential oil of choice. (we used none as the soap had plenty to make it smell great)

Grate your soap, Add in the Borax and soda. We worked it with our hands to get the soap smaller as our grater isnt to small. It was fast and easy. Add in the ess. oils if you want to.
Pour into a airtight container and label. We use 2 TBS of the powder per average load.

Laundry Soap!

We had a great break for Thanksgiving! Pray yours was lovely also!
Today we are going to make Laundry soap. We have 2 recipes that we are doing. 1 is our normal recipe. The other is new to see which one we like better. We will be posting recipes and pictures of the process later.
We like knowing what goes into our soaps. We have several in our family with sensitive skin.Which greatly limits out options of soaps. We do what we can to make all we use.
And we can personally scent them to our choices. Yum!

We are adding a new line to our store! Beeswax candles! My Dad is a beekeeper. I bought my first molds when I was a young teen. I started to sell candles then at craft shows and farmers market. It was a fun hobby that I did for a few yrs and started back up in the spring. It has been so fun! Didn't know how I missed it!

Our wax is from my Dad's bees in central KS and also from a local Amish beekeeper here in Missouri. It is a beautiful golden color! And has a light honey scent. We use quality cotton wicks. 100% beeswax no additives.We leave the wick long so before burning TRIM them. Otherwise it will burn too fast and may cause problems.

Lavender Soap!

Lavender has a lovely sweet floral scent! Very relaxing! And fresh smelling. Our Lavender soap has lavender buds and lavender essential oil.
Lavender is known to be soothing to cuts, burns and skin irritations. It disinfects the skin and scalp. It is added to baby soaps to encourage good relaxing sleep, it is great for tense muscles, muscle aches, sprains and tension.
We like to bath our children in it at night to help them rest and smell pretty. Amazes me how long the smell lingers on them!
A nice pretty soap! We really like it!

Our Spearmint Soap now contains Powdered comfrey leaf to color the soap a lovely green color! And adds benefits!
Comfrey is a bone knitting herb, great for skin problems,burns,helps with yeast infections,can help to clean and heal wounds!
We love comfrey for its healing of eczema. It is the best soap we have found to treat our daughters eczema!
Spearmint is a anti septic, anti spasmodic,disinfectant,promotes relaxing, bug repellant,and helps acne.

It is often recommended for easing migraines (especially those stemming from digestive problems); it helps clear sinuses.
Mentally, it clears the brain and is a mental stimulant. It is great if you are a morning shower person. Strong and Invigorating!
It has been said to help with itching due to bug bites, chicken pox and poison ivy. We have found truth in this personally.
For poison ivy we like to wash up with it and let it dry on to cure it faster.

Orange Soap!

The benefits of our Orange Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties like anti inflammatory, anti septic, and anti depressant. The smell alone is said to lift the mood! Which I very much agree on. Yum! It smells just like a perfectly ripe orange!
It is known to have anti wrinkle properties as well! Which I (like many others) am finding as the yrs add on!
It's anti septic qualities may be able to might help us avoid both septic and tetanus as it inhibits microbial growth and disinfects the wounds. Which is a great soap to have around on the farm.
It serves as a detoxifier and is very good for maintaining a healthy, smooth and glamorous skin. It also may help cure acne and dermatitis.
We love our orange soap. And like all the rest of our great soaps you will find no fillers, artificial anythings or junk. Just plain goodness!

Our current batches are colored with powdered Tumeric. They are 2 toned. My children call them orange cream!

Patchouli Soap ~ Now 50% stronger scent!

Our Patchouli soap is a wonderful deep, earthy scent. Our customers love the lingering scent as a perfume. It is strong yet mellow. And not over powering. We use 100% patchouli essential oil in our soaps.
Patchouli is noted to be great for skin issues like acne, eczema, inflamed, cracked, chapped and irritated skin. It is a anti fungal so it is perfect for athletes feet. It is said to tone and tighten the skin, and is used in many anti wrinkle blends At the same time it helps regulate oily skin and dandruff . We have customers that love this soap as a shampoo. (with a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse)
Patchouli is said to help to reduce tension, insomnia and anxiety.

Olive oil~
softens and smooths your skin and is great for dry and sensitive skin because olive oil is a emollient ( softens or soothes the skin).

Baker's Creek Heirloom Seed's Spring Festival!

This was our first time to BCHS. We had a lot of fun there were so many people there to enjoy! Sunday was really wet and muddy. The girls had mud up to there knees! People were getting stuck in the mud. They turned so many people away at the road. Sunday was much better! They brought in hay and made us yellow straw roads.

We let the girls handle a lot of the sales. We were glad people had patience why we helped our children learn to better count money back to them. All our girls want to run thr register!

We had a great time getting to know a few people and hope to see them again next yr!

Tea tree oil is a clear to very pale golden color essential oil with a fresh scent. It is taken from the leaves of the melaleuca alternifolia which is native to the northeast coast of New South Wales Australia. The oil has beneficial medical properties (including antiseptic and antifungal, antibacterial action).
It has been said to treat staph ( even MRSA),candida, acne and possibly help virus such as chicken pox and others.

Here we go off and running. Emily and I have been waiting for a long time to start a home based business of our own. Emily has been making and selling soap for over ten years, to family and friends. We have built up our inventory and right now we have over seven hundred bars of soap made and soon over a THOUSAND! Our first show will be May 3, and 4th at Baker's Creek Heirloom Seeds, in Mayfield, MO. Looking forward to seeing You there.
